The Great Oklahoma Ice Storm
Beautiful, but treacherous
Snow is one thing, but that's a sheet of ice covering our ranch and the roads in and out. To add to the inconvenience of not being able to travel, we were also without power for almost a week. Although we had electric generators to keep the animals (and ourselves) sufficiently warm, we were without water because of the lack of power needed to run the electric pumps that provide us with our well water. In order to keep the animals watered, pond ice needed to be broken up and water had to be hauled by truck to the barn. Tank heaters were used to keep the water from refreezing.
In spite of the challenges that Mother Nature throws at us, life goes on. Three crias were born during the week, appropriately named Diamond Peruvian Snowflake, Diamond Ice Princess and Diamond Hot Tin Roof (wishful thinking). Needless to say, we are anxiously looking forward to much warmer weather. |
